The mistake nearly everyone makes at the start

The part in your hand is used. It has wear, burrs, a distortion from the time it was dropped, and the marks of its last regrind. If you rebuild the CAD by faithfully copying the mesh, you reproduce all of it — and you end up manufacturing a new part with the old one's wear built in at the factory.

Reverse engineering is not tracing. It is deducing what the design intent was and rebuilding that, not the surface left behind after ten years of service. That judgement is the centre of this course.

Prerequisites

User-level parametric CAD is required. Scanning is not: if your starting point is the physical part rather than the mesh, the 3D scanning course is the step before this one.

The legal question, worth stating

Reverse engineering your own part, a discontinued spare or a component with no remaining supplier is normal industrial practice. Reproducing a design covered by a live patent is not. The course explains where that line sits, because it is a question that always comes up and deserves an honest answer rather than a silence.

If you would rather not build it in-house

The reverse engineering service exists for that. It makes sense when the project is isolated, or when the part demands a level of reconstruction you will not need again.

Which software is used?

The judgement is software-independent and that is what gets taught. Exercises are done in whichever CAD you already use; if you use none, in ours.

Does it cover plastic and sheet metal parts?

Yes, and they are treated separately because they behave differently: plastic distorts on ejection and sheet metal has a flat pattern. Rebuilding them as if they were solid machined parts gives a model that cannot be manufactured.

Can I bring one of my own parts?

That is what we recommend. A real part of yours, with its real problem, teaches more than any prepared exercise.

How long does it take?

Two days. If your team will work mainly with organic surfaces, we extend it by one more, because that is the part requiring the most hands-on practice.

Is dimensional validation included?

CAD-to-mesh comparison is, which is the validation proper to the reconstruction itself. Judging a part's conformity is a different discipline and lives in the dimensional metrology course.
