When it is the control that is obsolete, not the machine

This is a very common situation in plants running twenty- or thirty-year-old equipment: the mechanical structure is still solid and accurate, but the control belongs to a generation nobody manufactures any more. Every fault turns into a hunt for spares on the second-hand market, and the risk grows with each month that passes.

Replacing the whole machine is the expensive answer. Revamping keeps what still works — the mechanics — and renews what does not.

Industry 4.0 without the buzzwords

Connecting a machine achieves nothing if nobody is going to look at the data or decide anything with it. Instrumenting makes sense when it answers a specific question you cannot answer today: how often it stops and why, how long a changeover really takes, whether wear follows a predictable pattern.

That is the difference between an attractive dashboard and a maintenance decision you can defend with numbers. It is the same measure-in-order-to-improve logic that governs this whole division.

The parts that no longer exist

A revamping project almost always runs into a discontinued mechanical component. That is where the rest of CoreMesh comes in: we scan the part, rebuild its CAD and manufacture it. A discontinued spare stops being a reason to retire the machine.

When is revamping the right call versus buying new equipment?

If the mechanics are sound and what is obsolete is the control, revamping usually costs a fraction. If the structure no longer holds the accuracy you need, no new control fixes that. That assessment is the first step.

Does production have to stop?

Some shutdown is required, but it is planned: a good part of the work is prepared off-line to shorten the window. Defining that window is part of project planning.

What if the machine has no documentation?

That is normal with older equipment. The information is captured from the real machine, and on the mechanical side it can be rebuilt through 3D scanning and reverse engineering.

Is instrumenting for Industry 4.0 worth it?

Only if there is a specific question you cannot answer today and that would change a decision. Instrumenting for the sake of having data produces dashboards nobody opens.

Can you manufacture discontinued spare parts?

Yes. 3D scanning, reverse engineering and CNC machining are CoreMesh's own services, so a discontinued part stops being an obstacle.
