What actually stops a scan
Anyone who has tried recognises the list: the polished steel part the sensor cannot see, the pass that will not close against the previous one, the mesh full of holes, the 400 MB file nobody can open afterwards. None of those is solved by reading the equipment manual, because none of them is an equipment problem.
They are process decisions: what resolution to choose, when to prepare the surface and when not to, where to place references, how much overlap to scan with, and what to do with the mesh before handing it over. That is what this course teaches.
Syllabus
- Which scanner for which part. Resolution, capture volume and accuracy. Why the most expensive unit can be the worst one for your geometry.
- Difficult surfaces. Shiny, dark, transparent. When matting spray solves it, when it distorts the measurement, and what the alternatives are.
- References and targets. When they are needed, where to place them, and why they sometimes make the result worse.
- Scanning strategy. Path, overlap and drift control on long parts.
- Alignment and registration. Joining passes without dragging accumulated error along.
- Mesh processing. Cleanup, hole filling and decimation without losing what matters.
- Export. STL, PLY, interchange formats and which one each destination expects.
- When scanning is the wrong tool. Some parts are measured faster and better with a caliper. Telling them apart saves days.
On real parts
We work with production parts, not the demonstration figurine that ships with the equipment. If the training is at your plant, we work with yours — your lighting, your space, your materials, which is where the problems a classroom cannot reproduce show up.
Who it is for
Engineering, quality or maintenance staff who already own the equipment or are about to receive it. No previous scanning experience is required; some CAD familiarity helps but is not a prerequisite.
After the scan
A mesh is neither a part nor a drawing. If what you need is an editable model, the natural continuation is the reverse engineering course. If what you need is to judge whether the part conforms, it is dimensional metrology.
