The argument that repeats in every plant
The customer rejects the lot. You measure again and it is within tolerance. They measure again and it is out. Both of you have numbers and both of you are right, because you are not measuring the same thing: one seats the part on one face and the other on a different one, and that detail shifts the dimension more than all the process variation put together.
What is missing there is not a better instrument. It is an agreed datum reference frame — and that is exactly what GD&T exists to write onto the drawing so the argument stops.
Syllabus
- Datum reference frames. Primary, secondary and tertiary datums, and why the order in which the part is seated changes the result.
- Geometric tolerancing symbols. Flatness, perpendicularity, position, concentricity, profile: what each one controls and which is most often misused.
- Dimensional versus geometric tolerance. When a ±0.1 dimension is stricter than it looks, and when it is useless.
- Measurement uncertainty. No number is exact. How to estimate it, and why a ±0.02 tolerance measured with a ±0.03 instrument means nothing.
- Repeatability and reproducibility. How much of the variation you see belongs to the part and how much to whoever is measuring.
- Acceptance criteria. Decide before measuring. A criterion chosen after the result is not a criterion.
- CAD-to-part comparison. Deviation maps: what they show well and what they hide.
- The report. What it must contain to stand as evidence in front of a customer or an audit.
Who it is for
Inspectors, quality staff, process engineers and technical buyers who have to interpret or argue over a drawing. It also suits designers who have never watched one of their own parts get rejected because of how it was dimensioned.
About the instruments
The course sells no equipment. We work with calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, scanners and arms depending on what each exercise demands, because one of the things to learn is which of them the job calls for. A part that is measured faster and better with a caliper does not improve by being scanned.
