STEP vs STL: choose the deliverable
Choose the file for the job: surface visualization, geometry editing, manufacturing preparation or comparison to a nominal model.
STL: a triangulated surface
STL describes a surface using triangles. It does not contain a CAD feature history. Declare units and verify scale, resolution and mesh condition.
STEP: CAD data exchange
STEP is part of ISO 10303 for product data exchange. Exporter behavior and the application protocol determine the content. A STEP file does not guarantee preservation of the original parametric feature tree.
Agree on requirements first
- Intended use: printing, CAM programming, editing or inspection.
- Units, software version and exchange format.
- Whether native CAD with history is required in addition to exchange geometry.
- Comparison criteria for the sample, reconstructed model and nominal design.
From scanning to useful CAD
Changing an STL extension to STEP does not reconstruct design intent. Functional surfaces and wear require engineering interpretation. Request a defined output rather than just a file extension.
