Industrial parts without drawings
A surviving sample provides geometry, but wear and deformation may hide the intended dimensions. Reproducing a worn surface is different from recovering a functional replacement design.
What to provide
- Part function, equipment context and photos of damaged areas.
- Approximate dimensions, mating interfaces and other available samples.
- Known material or specifications; alloy cannot be established from appearance alone.
- Quantity, operating conditions and safety or acceptance requirements.
A project route to agree on
- Assess recoverable geometry and missing information.
- Capture accessible surfaces when scanning is useful.
- Reconstruct CAD with documented nominal decisions for customer review.
- Review manufacturing feasibility, material and tolerances.
- Agree on dimensional inspection and any required functional validation.
Deliverables and limitations
The scope may include an STL mesh, STEP exchange CAD, 2D drawings, manufacturing and inspection. Native formats and editability must be agreed; STEP does not guarantee a feature history.
A mesh alone does not establish heat treatment, service life or fitness for a safety-critical use. Missing functional references may require further investigation before manufacture.
